The Corner Store
I will get up and cross the street to the store
where an old man reaches cans on high shelves
with a metal armed pincer
then settles his body in a chair by the door.
He will talk of the weather long if I listen
remembering hurricanes, harvests and storms
a snowfall in May after which
snow filled the cups of the tulips and glistened.
He will pack my pears in a brown paper bag
take the time
to twist brown paper ears. There is a feel
of dust in the closing door as it chimes.
